Carrying out regular maintenance of your refrigerated equipment is key to maintaining an efficient refrigerated space. This week we follow one of our engineers onsite to find out what a refrigeration maintenance visit can look like?
Choosing a good maintenance plan can help to lengthen the life of your refrigeration system and reduce running costs by up to 20% per year. Maintenance checks can include:
- Compliant FGAS inspections
- Temperature and running pressures
- Cleaning the equipment
- Checking settings
- Defrost schedule
- Clear the area to make the most of the airflow
- Inspect seals and fix leaks
- Pressure tests
- Clean coils
- Check interior lights
As an example, this week one of our engineers, Mike, carried out a pressure and leak detection test following an FGAS inspection where the refrigeration system for a meat freezer was found to be short of refrigerant and leaking.
A refrigerant leak (see FGAS regulations/ FGAS blog) can cause a system to falter and increase the overall operating costs of the cooling system. In order to find the leaks within the system we carried out multiple leak checks which incorporated the visual bubble method (leak detection fluid) and the electronic method. Take a look at this video, which outlines the simple test we carried out to discover the leak and the evident bubbles produced, which made it completely clear to our engineer that there was a definitive leak that needed to be dealt with.
By taking time to do this planned maintenance check and FGAS inspection, the customer has not only saved on additional operational costs and potential downtime but also the potential loss of stock held within the freezer.
This customer is an example of how even the simplest maintenance check can pay dividends on operating costs etc; so its surprising to find refrigeration maintenance is so often neglected until a breakdown occurs. The Carbon Trust have done research that suggests a business can use up to 50% of the energy bill on refrigeration equipment. With this in mind, it makes sense to make sure this energy is used efficiently to keep costs down.
