STORE REFIT – SPAR BALA (WALES)

A traditional grocery store transformation into a contemporary SPAR.

CB Refrigeration were pleased to be involved with a recent SPAR store refit for AF Blakemore, to upgrade and modernise a popular convenience store in the small town of Bala, North Wales.

With refurbishment required in all areas of the store, CB were approached to look specifically at upgrading the refrigeration and air-conditioning systems and to advise on future improvements in efficiency and costs.

With demonstrated results in energy savings and ROI, CB proposed installing the Danfoss Optyma™ Plus INVERTER variable speed condensing unit, which combines market-leading expertise in condensing unit design with the unique benefits of stepless inverter scroll technology. The refrigeration system provides better food preservation and high cooling quality, a low refrigerant charge and is unmatched in terms of energy efficiency.

The air-conditioning within the building was upgraded to a Toshiba twin split system, another economic and efficient application.

The first task was to remove all old equipment from site, including the outdoor coldroom and dispose of it correctly. This gave a blank canvas to work with, enabling installation of the following:

• A new refrigeration system – with 3 year Danfoss warranty on parts.
• A new coldroom and freezer.
•An upgrade on all condensate drainage, with coils treated to prevent issues with bio-film (an issue convenience retailers suffer with as a result of water leak fails). This equipment also includes 5 year warranty, protecting a crucial part of the stores functionality.
•New refrigeration monitoring technology, with a new RDM temperature monitoring system installed to report effectively on HACCP and report failures immediately, with remote visibility.

The store is a popular village stop on a busy tourist route to Snowdonia and therefore a quick turn-around was required to complete all areas of the refurbishment. With a four week project timeframe we were able to complete our required elements within the shutdown, whilst manoeuvring around other contractors working in different areas of the store.

Project Results
•Upgrade saves 25%+ energy against the existing system
•Risk reduced from single point of failure
•Pipe work insulation UV treated, OFN purged, labelled and installed correctly to each new header and chilled HT case
•Mains sub-board and new supplies installed by our partner business Ayjay Group
•New pipe work and headers to refrigeration display cases
•New control wiring
•New air conditioning systems, pumps and drainage
•In house design of services and wiring
•Delivered on time during the four week shutdown.
